The root of shiny object syndrome

Apr 29, 2024

Hi lovey,

I was talking to a former client of mine the other day.

She is so smart, so talented, such and authority in her field… and she still said this...

“I know what to do... I just can’t get myself to do the things I need to do!”

Woof. I felt that for her.

It reminded me of all the times—years ago—when I would sit down with intention to work on my business and spin out because I:

* Didn’t know where to start

* Didn’t know what to prioritize

* Didn’t know how to do something

* Didn’t know how to get out of the emotional paralysis I was in

I would jump from checking my email to checking social media to beating myself up for not making a reel or a post then back to email to see if the answers to all my problems were there (they weren’t) then I’d get hungry and go for a snack… then feel unbearably tired and think I needed a nap.

That habitual behavior was SO EXHAUSTING, 100% unproductive and also played right into the fear that I didn’t know how to run a business and therefore wasn’t good enough (at anything).

Can you relate?

What I didn’t realize at the time was that I was actually taking a lot of action and creating some great options for potential clients, but I had some big emotions in the way that kept me from seeing that.

I believe that if you’re having trouble with focus and productivity, emotions are at the root of it.

For me there were a couple big emotions lurking under the surface:

Panic. I think anxiety is often unprocessed panic. It's shown up to be cleared, over and over, in a number of my chronically anxious clients.

Indecisiveness. All jokes aside about being an indecisive Libra—lol—I have been known to go around and around and AROUND about the smallest decisions because I didn’t trust myself… which brings me to the biggest emotion that I needed to clear…

Worthlessness. I had to clear my own unprocessed feeling of worthlessness and A TON of inherited worthlessness from ancestors. A TON. I didn’t think that anything I created was good enough to be offered to world, paid OR free, so I was constantly reworking things that were actually VERY GOOD.

When you walk around with a subconscious ticker tape running in your head that “It doesn’t matter… no one’s going to want what I create… and even if they do, I don’t think I can help them… what’s the point?”

It can be VERY HARD to get your brain to also be all focused on building anything because there’s a big part of you who’s not sold on you.

That, energetically, doesn’t feel good to you and that usually those vibes can be felt by potential clients.

Then they don’t buy or don’t hire you and that feels bad.

So then… you try something completely different (shiny object syndrome!) thinking that it will feel better if you use a different strategy (even though you didn’t completely work the last one)  or create a new offer (even though you didn’t fully promote the last one) or burn down an entire business (because you’re convinced that it’s the business and not your inner world that needs reworking).

Do you see how it can be this vicious cycle of not ever really sticking with something long enough to make money and scale it that can end up not ultimately serving you?

Do you see how this pattern never gives you a chance to get REALLY GOOD at something and therefore reinforcing the belief that you’re not good enough? (an untrue belief, but still one that many people hold)

Now, the caveat is that yes, you’re allowed to change your mind You’re allowed to pivot. You’re allowed to do something that feels more aligned for you.

Always! It’s your business.

But there’s a difference between making an informed decision after careful thought and reactively chasing something shiny again and again.

Right?

Right.

One thing that I know has helped me to identify when I’m chasing something shiny versus being strategic, besides clearing trapped emotions regularly, is my daily meditation practice.

I meditate for so many reasons: to calm my body and mind, to ground myself in my body, to connect with spirit, to give my brain a rest, and also, to function better as a human and as a business owner.

I have a whole toolbox of ways that I manage myself (such a crucial CEO skill) and meditation is at the top of my list.

When you sit in silence on a daily basis, you will find yourself having more spontaneous downloads of ways to improve your business, more clarity about your next steps and yes, you will find yourself (with time) having wild spiritual occurrences happen related to your business.

[Hello downloads!]

Also, as an added benefit, you will see your focus, clarity and confidence improve with your daily work—and that’s whether you’re self-employed or not.

It all dovetails so nicely together.

In the next few weeks I’ll be launching my Spiritual Meditation for Beginners class.

(Also... PS: In case I don't make this clear, I don’t do business without a spiritual component. I feel like that's obvious, but I'm wondering if I don't talk about it enough.)

This class is the perfect way to begin training your mind to show up positively in your business every day rather than falling back into emotionally driven habits that don’t support you.

Would you like to be on the early bird list, get 10% off when you sign up and be sure to get a spot in the class?

Click here to add your name to the list and be prioritized when the class goes on sale.

I definitely want you to join the ranks of people who have learned how to make meditation work for them.

I absolutely want you to learn the ways it can work for YOU.

If you’re meditating and it feels good and you feel successful, oooh watch out!

You just might become one of those people who meditates regularly AND has a rocking business. ;)

Be sure to get on the list here so you can be one of the first folks to sign up when the class goes live.

Have a glorious rest of your day lovebug!

Rebecca*

PS: Remember... meditation is for spiritual growth AND business growth. They are most definitely linked, so go get on that list!
