Help for when the worlds feels crazy

anxiety Jul 08, 2024

Hello lovebug,

It’s been a wild week politically.

I’ve been on vacation in an attempt to escape the chaotic energy and seemingly never ending fireworks going on in my neighborhood.

I spent the week doing very little other than the basics: sleeping, eating, staring off at the horizon and meditating two to three times a day.

I was doing pretty well until the Supreme Court made some decisions that started to spin me all the way out.

Suddenly, in this beautiful and peaceful place, my heart started to race like I was quite literally under attack.

[sidebar: I was not under attack]

It was so very quiet and so very still in this beautiful place in central Oregon, but in my mind, I wasn’t there in the peace and quiet; I was living in some kind of apocalyptic future.

It felt awful.

I couldn’t sleep.

I couldn’t go sit on the deck and enjoy the sunset (and it was a beautiful sunset).

I felt trapped. And scared.

And honestly, my environment hadn’t changed at all.

Now I know some of you may be reading this and thinking, “but things HAVE changed and we ARE DOOMED.”

Deep breath.

I like to remind everyone that we have been through hard things many times, just in my lifetime.

We all freaked out about something and then it didn’t actually happen.

Or it wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be.

Or something better came out of it eventually.

So when I’m starting to freak out, I have to remind myself that I am freaking out because I have left my body.

I am no longer here, I am somewhere else.

I am reliving a scary memory or imagining a terrifying future.

So when things get scary for you, when things feel out of control, when you find yourself frantically JUMPING ahead to a worst case scenario (on a personal or global scale), see if you can catch yourself in the moment.

Become aware of what you’re doing.

Get yourself back in the actual room you’re in.

Move the slider in your brain from that scary place in the past or future back to the now.

Zhooooooooooop! (that was the slider moving back to the present)

And breathe

If you don’t know that you’re doing some unconscious time travel, you can't stop yourself from doing said unconscious time travel.

But once you know what you’re doing, you can DO something about it.

So get yourself back to now.

Remember that things OFTEN work out better than we expected.

Stop, center yourself, breathe. Be here.

Sending a big calming hug,

Rebecca*
