AUGUST SPECIAL [+How to take the cringe out of a memory]

Do you ever replay things that you did in the past and absolutely CRINGE?
I was doing this just the other day because I said something and I think it landed badly and it was an innocent statement, but the person didn’t receive it that way and UGGGGHHHH.
I absolutely tortured myself with it for a good 48 hours.
Relatable?
(For most people, the answer is yes.)
Turns out we’re all human and that means we make decidedly human mistakes.
OR—we make up stories that make us feel like we did something wrong (when actually nothing is wrong).
It’s all such a wild ride.
We all have those memories that REALLY bring up big feelings when we think back on them and they don’t have to be cringe-worthy ones.
Simply by thinking about a situation, you can get into feelings of rage, anxiety, grief, betrayal, terror, or worthlessness.
Life is so much lighter when you can move through the day NOT revisiting that old unprocessed gunk from the past, but how the heck do you get the intensity of those emotions to disappear when they feel so raw and powerful?
Well, I’ve got a few suggestions…

You can write about it. And I mean write ALL about the event that takes you from zero to 60—unabashedly. You’ve got to write all the details of the event, all the feelings, all the angst or fear or grief… all the things you would never admit to anyone—write it OUT. Then do that again and again and again for a few days until you can think about the event without feeling the energetic charge of that emotion come up.
You can tap on it. I don’t talk about it much but I’m a Emotional Freedom Technique practitioner—also known as EFT or tapping. EFT involves tapping on certain acupressure points on the body while bringing to mind a particularly charged memory or belief and making statements about that memory or belief. EFT is powerful work and it can bring up all sorts of big feelings as you tap. There’s a ton of info online around EFT for self work.
You can identify the feelings related to the event and actually FEEL them. With all of these suggestions I’m making, the commonality is that you are completing the processing portion of experiencing the emotion. One of the reasons why you cringe when you think of a memory is because you’re feeling the emotion and then not continuing to feel it (because it doesn’t feel great). It can be amazing to break down the emotion into sensations and then feel those sensations instead of calling it embarrassment or betrayal or fear. What do they feel like in your body? Tension? Pressure? Heat? Feel those things and you feel the emotion fully – allowing it to process.
